Smartphones also use operating systems:

iOS: Specifically used in Apple’s iPhones.
Android: Used by various smartphone brands.

These operating systems manage the functions of the devices they are installed on. They handle tasks and allow users to run applications.

Microsoft Windows
Microsoft Windows is one of the most popular operating systems.

When you switch ON a computer, the Windows operating system loads into the computer’s memory automatically.

While loading, the Windows symbol appears on the screen.

After a few seconds, a welcome message appears.

Let’s explore some common terms related to operating systems, using Windows as an example.

DID YOU KNOW?
There are different versions of Windows, such as Windows 10, Windows 11, along with previous versions like Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Desktop and Icons

After the Windows welcome message appears, you will see a screen with small images. This screen is referred to as the *Desktop*, and the small images are called *Icons*.

The icons on the desktop might represent a file, a folder, or a program. Double‑click an icon to open it.

TOP TIP
When you open a program, it appears in a box called a *window*. You can move, resize, minimise, or close it. You can have windows open on both *MacOS* and *Windows* operating systems.
