How to make a grading rubric
- Start with the learning objective. Describe the work students should be able to produce. Select the assignment type that best matches the task.
- Choose observable criteria. Separate evidence, reasoning and organization when they assess different skills. Avoid grading the same weakness twice.
- Choose 3, 4 or 5 performance levels. Three levels give a compact progression; four or five allow finer distinctions when you can explain those distinctions clearly.
- Generate and revise. Replace broad language with examples from your task. Check that each level describes the same skill at a different degree of success.
- Share before the assignment. Discuss a sample response, explain the weights and let students use the rubric for self-checking.
A writing rubric generator: worked example
For a Grades 3–5 opinion paragraph, a useful starting set is ideas, evidence, organization and conventions. If the objective focuses on supporting an opinion, give evidence more emphasis than spelling. These are example choices, not a prescribed grading policy.

Rubric maker for projects, presentations and math
A presentation rubric can separate content accuracy, sequence, delivery and supporting materials. A science investigation rubric can assess the question, method, observations and conclusion. In mathematics, separate strategy, accuracy, reasoning and representation so a correct answer does not hide unclear reasoning.

Weighted rubrics and scoring
Equal weighting gives every criterion the same share of the total. Custom weighting lets you emphasize selected learning outcomes. The editable percentages must total 100 before copying, downloading or printing. For four criteria, you might use 40%, 30%, 20% and 10%.
The suggested calculation is sum of (level score ÷ maximum level score × criterion weight). On a four-level rubric, scores of 3, 4, 2 and 3 with those weights yield 30 + 30 + 10 + 7.5 = 77.5%. This tool creates the rubric; it does not score student work. Level 1 earns partial credit under this formula.
